Radiation Therapy

Image Radiation Therapy is the use of ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.  Typically the equipment used for treatment is a linear accelerator that has external beam technology.  Over the years this beam of radiation has gone from being delivered in rectangular form to having the ability to be shaped more closely to the tumor being treated.  There has been a recent breakthrough in radiation therapy with the development of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) that is used in conjunction with IMRT.  IMRT enables radiation to be delivered in a customized shape and intensity to treat the tumor size and thickness, helping to minimize radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.  IGRT has the added advantage of tracking and adjusting to tumor movement during treatment for more precise radiation delivery.  IMRT and IGRT are used to treat cancers of the lung, prostate, head and neck, and breast where tumor movement most often occurs.
